predator-prey waves — helpful interventions backfire

Killing off the foxes looks like help, but it removes the one thing keeping the rabbits in check, so the rabbits overrun the meadow and then starve once there’s nothing left to eat. The boom-and-bust swing isn’t a system in trouble — two populations cycling out of phase with each other is what a stable predator-prey system actually looks like from the inside.
