A fold is a mirror. Everything on one side of the crease reflects across it and lands on top of everything else, and that is the whole of what your hands were doing to a newspaper when you made a hat out of it. Here the crease is the perpendicular bisector of your drag, the printed columns bend and run upside down with the paper because they are one texture being reflected, and the object is judged only on its finished outline -- so any order of folds that produces the shape produces the shape.
