An infinite, endless field of stars means no line of sight ever escapes without hitting one — pack in enough of them and the gaps between stars vanish into a single wall of light. The real sky stays dark because the universe has a finite age: light from the most distant stars hasn’t had time to reach us yet, and that darkness is itself evidence there was a beginning.
